A tour around West Virginia can start at the capital city, Charleston.
The WV State Capital, with its 292-foot-tall gold dome.

Treat yourself to a-made-from-scratch chocolate chip
scone from The Vandalia or sip a coffee and a tasty pasty from Taylor Books.
Next, visit Cathedral Falls on Cane Creek near Gauley Bridge, US-60 E. It is WV’s highest waterfall, dropping 60 feet over a shale and sandstone rocky ledge.
Cathedral Falls is easily accessed and viewed from the road.
A paved path to a bridge offers good views of the falls, while a short dirt trail leads to a closer look and may be slippery.
Use caution when approaching the base of the falls.
Further along US-60E is the Hawks Nest Aerial Tram in Ansted. However, the tram will be closed for the 2024 season, and the new aerial tram is estimated to open in 2025.

If sweet but spicy Dirty Bird wings or a chicken sandwich topped with raspberry and chipotle sauce suits your taste palate, stop at The 304 in Fayetteville for lunch.

Further south, in Beckley, is the Phillips-Sprague Mine, also known as the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. This historic coal mine is located at New River Park and opened about 1889, on what had been an operating drift mine.

At the Exhibition Coal Mine, visitors ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. Veteran miners will guide you and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities of past and present-day miners. Hint: Bring a jacket; it’s around 58 degrees underground.
Castle Rock towers above the convergence of Rock Castle Creek and Guyandotte River on Castle Rock Road in Pineville. It is a perpendicular formation over 130 feet in height, carved from Pineville Sandstone of the New River Series by the Guyandotte River, which flows by the rock’s base.
The Hatfield–McCoy Trails in Logan is a trail system famous for its recreational trails for ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. However, the trails are also open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders. The trail system also connects with three trails—Warrior, Indian Ridge, and Pocahontas—to allow extended off-road trips. All trails are known for their breathtaking scenic views and proximity to world-class whitewater rafting and snow skiing.
Enjoying 1010 Bridge lobster mac and cheese is a fitting end
to a fabulous and memorable tour.
