Understanding Propane Gas in Truck Campers
Guide to LPG Usage and Maintenance
Propane gas, often called LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or LP gas, is a crucial component in truck camper operation. This versatile gas is non-toxic, colorless, clean-burning, and odorless in its natural state. It comprises a mixture of flammable hydrocarbon gases, making it ideal for heating, cooking, and cooling purposes within the compact confines of a truck camper.
The Importance of Detecting LPG Leaks
Despite its numerous advantages, LPG’s odorless nature poses a significant safety concern. To mitigate this issue, manufacturers add Ethanethiol to the gas, imparting a distinctive odor that allows for easy leak detection. Given that LPG is heavier than air, any leakage will cause the gas to settle along the truck camper’s floor. Consequently, truck camper manufacturers strategically install LPG detectors near the floor to detect LPG early and prevent potential hazards.
the LPG container

The most common LPG containers for truck campers are 20—or 30-pound cylinders. These cylinders can be mounted horizontally or vertically, but they are not interchangeable.
Inspection and Recertification
Safety regulations mandate that LPG cylinders undergo inspection and recertification every 10 years after manufacture, and subsequently every 5 years. As a truck camper owner, knowing this inspection interval requirement is crucial to ensure compliance and maintain safety.
Manufacturers stamp the cylinder’s date on the protective collar and the neck ring. For instance, a cylinder manufactured in July 2012 must be recertified before July 2022 and every five years thereafter. Additionally, the collar bears the cylinder’s empty weight, known as the TW (tare weight).
TW for a vertical cylinder is about 24 pounds, generally called a “20 pounder,” while horizontal cylinders have a TW of 27 pounds.
A “20 pounder,” when filled to the legal capacity of 80%, will weigh about 38 pounds.
